NEW DELHI: Rains and hailstorms lashed some parts of Himachal Pradesh as the mercury dipped at many places in north India today due to strong south-easterly winds except Rajasthan where it shot up to nearly 48 degree celsius in Ganganagar. Chandigarh and its surrounding areas recorded a maximum of 36 degrees Celsius, down two degrees from normal. The mercury fell to two to four degrees below normal at various other places in the State. Even as the lower hills of Himachal continued to reel under scorching sun, Dharamsala and its surrounding areas were lashed by a severe hailstorm disrupting normal life and damaging crops. The Dhauladhar mountain ranges had fresh snowfall while Palampur and its adjoining areas were lashed by rains causing considerable fall in day temperature.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan got no let-up from the heat wave as the mercury rose in Ganganagar to 47.9 degrees Celsius today even though it took a dip in some places of the desert state. Weather forecasters ascribed ``upper air disturbances'' for the upward swing in temperatures and predicted more dust-storms and haze over the desert state over the next two days with no possibility of rain. Ganganagar that posted a maximum temperature of 46.9 C yesterday inched up to 47.9 degrees Celsius today while Jaipur fell a notch to 42.1 C with a relative humidity of 44 per cent, they said.Ajmer recorded 42.5, Jaisalmer, 42.8, Kota, 42.7, Dabok 40, Barmer 40, Jodhpur 40.2, Bikaner 44.6, and Churu recorded 46 degrees Celsius. Police meanwhile dismissed reports of a policeman dying of sun stroke in Dholpur. - PTI
