Redesign helmets

It is laudable that the State Government is implementing helmet rule in all cities. Motorcyclists should wear helmet while riding as it protects them from injuries in the event of an accident. But, the issue has a flip side too. Vehicle users complain that they are unable hear any sound, including horns of vehicles coming from behind. There is an increasing demand for modifications in the headgear. Helmet manufacturing companies should keep this in mind while designing new models.

Capital issue

Andhra Pradesh was carved out during reorganisation of States on linguistic basis. People of all the three regions in the State are speaking the same language, Telugu. Constitution of separate zone for the metropolitan cities will be detrimental to the interests of employees and others who settled in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

Cosmopolitan culture has taken roots there and non-development, if any, is a by-product of the misrule of successive Governments and the neglect of power-mongering local leaders. If the demand for separate Telangana is deemed fit, the Central Government may allow separate Statehood for the remaining region of Telangana other than the twin cities.

Where is the need for

new varsities?

The State Government has decided to open three universities at Nizamabad, Kadapa and Rajahmundry. The decision is not proper and justified in the present scenario of shortage of funds. There is no demand from students and parents of the respective regions for opening of new universities. I do not know why the State Government is so keen on spending huge money on new universities. Instead, it can use the funds to develop infrastructure in the existing universities.

A true tribute indeed

The naming of Vamsadhara irrigation project in Srikakulam after Sardar Gouthu Latchanna will be a true homage to the departed soul. A staunch Gandhian and one of the greatest warriors of our freedom struggle, Latchanna dedicated his life for uplift of the downtrodden. Upset over failure to achieve his dream of `Ramarajya,' the freedom fighter kept away from active politics.

Freebies vs. development

In view of the tall promises made by all political parties in Tamil Nadu to lure voters, it is time for a wide discussion on freebies. When nothing is free except air in the world these days, how far is it possible promising freebies?

If all the revenues are spent on distributing the promised free gifts to people, would the State develop any further? I request the Election Commission to check and clear the manifestoes of political parties by the time of releasing election notifications. Electorate should also think about the possibilities of implementing the poll-eve promises of political parties.

Curbs on courier services

It is sad to note that the Department of Posts has decided to restrict the courier services by imposing a ban on serving letters weighing below 300 grams. The department is serving people a lot and one can send any message to anywhere in the country by writing it on a postcard which costs just 50 paise. Undoubtedly, it is a great service to poor people. At the same time, courier services, too, are offering services to the urbanites.

They are delivering letters within 24 hours and offering an acknowledgement to the senders to this effect. I request the officials concerned to reconsider their decision.
