Release instalments to pensioners

Two D.R. instalments are due to retired employees since July 1, 2005 and January 1, 2006 as the Centre had already released them to its pensioners. As such, the Andhra Pradesh Government is requested to release them. The pensioners who retired prior to 2003, deserve weightage for consolidation of the pension as was done in 1999, though the PRC 2005 did not make any specific recommendation. The weightages are: 1) 3% to the pensioners who retired between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2003, 5% to those retired between January 1990 and December 31, 2000 and 7% to those retired prior to January 1 , 1990. The government is requested to take a sympathetic view and allow weightages.

Set up citizens

welfare board

It is very much essential to set up a "Senior Citizens Welfare Board" in our country. Also for non- pensioners, "Life members" of the Red Cross Society of India, must get concessional bills for their medical treatment from any nursing homes across the country. The banks must allow them to maintain a minimum balance of Rs. 250 in their saving account.

EAMCET: bad quality

of pencils supplied

This is brought to the notice of JNTU authorities who conducted EAMCET on May 4. It is general tendency that most of the students might have experienced the same problem while answering the EAMCET. In this context, may I explain a problem faced by my daughter:

The pencil supplied to her in the examination hall was of inferior quality (Kores Brand). The lead of the pencil was getting broken as many number of times as it was while sharpening and also while writing, the pencil lead was getting broken into pieces, with the result she had to undergo lot of stress and that made her impossible to solve the problems in time. It is pity that much time was wasted and many problems were left unattempted for want of time. Had she been allowed a good quality pencil brought by her in the examination hall, she would have attempted all the problems without inviting any mistakes. I, therefore request the JNTU authorities that students be allowed to bring their own material so that such instances should not recur in future.

Misleading

advertisement

It is surprising to see that the Government of India had issued a advertisement ( The Hindu dated. 11-3-2006), encouraging and promoting the consumption of processed food, citing five specious reasons. No promoter, conscious of health will agree with the contents of this advertisement which conveniently omitted to mention that processed food contains excessive sodium. The latter is harmful to health, leading to heart diseases, hypertension, sugar, obesity etc. Processed food is not at all a substitute to fruits, homemade food, milk etc. It is particularly detrimental to the health of children. Such advertisements will lead to the depletion of consumption of natural food, and would tell upon the welfare of the farming community. The Government of India may consider stopping the issue of such advertisements, which do not serve national interest from the health point of view.

Group-D employees

denied promotions

If an employee acquires higher qualification, it is an asset to the organisation. His / her services should be utilised in a proper manner. The institutes of higher learning, the universities should stand as a good example in this regard. Many group-D employees working in universities are suffering a lot for having acquired higher qualification such as graduation, post graduation, etc. They are denied promotions, but on the basis of seniority they should be considered. Those who are above 45 years are to be given exemption from typewriting qualification. Having also put in more than 16 years of service, the senior group-D employees are denied promotions, because they do not have typewriting skills. Hence the authorities should take necessary steps in this regard immediately to help

the lower category employees.

RTC responds

This has reference to the news letter published in The Hindu , Dt. 8.5.2006 under caption `Shift bus stop to Old place' in this column. It was mentioned that due to road widening, the bus stop at Alwal towards Secunderabad has been shifted and is inconvenient. It is informed that the decision to shift the bus stop at Alwal towards Secunderabad station was taken by the City Co-ordination Committee Consisting of the Police, MCH and other authorities.

The points mentioned like parking of lorries and other vehicles are causing difficulty, has been noted. It is observed that the problem is about regulation of traffic at the bus stop. Hence the matter has been referred to the Co-Ordination Committee, particularly the police for taking necessary action.

Honour PV

Apropos T.H Chowdary's letter, The Hindu dated 8-5-2006, I feel that it is far better to name Karimnagar district as P.V. District or to create a new "P.V. District" with Nandyal as its headquarters out of the existing Kurnool district, which would be an apt tribute to PV's stature.
