10 city junctions to glitter with modern traffic signals

    HYDERABAD: The Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH) will set up modern traffic signals at 10 locations, besides upgrading existing traffic signals at five other places from incandescent lights to light emitting diodes (LEDs).

    Some 111 locations were identified for introducing modern traffic lights in the twin cities under the jurisdiction of MCH of which lights have been installed in 89 of them.

    Last year, some 17 junctions got new traffic lights and upgradation to LEDs was taken up in 16 other places.

    Better visibility

    LEDs will ensure better visibility and for longer distances, compared with conventional incandescent lights, say officials. Police Control Room, Saidabad, Hotel Ayodhya, Panjagutta, Ameerpet, S.R. Nagar, Sarathi Studious, ESI are some of the LED spots.

    Signal upgradation is planned at Banjara Hills Road Nos. 1 & 10, Ravindra Bharati, Nampally, KCP and Khairatabad. New traffic signals are at Masab Tank, Tilaknagar, King Koti, Srinagar Colony, VST, Ek Minar, Rethi Bowli, Humayunagar, Old Mehdipatnam, etc.

    A majority of them were already installed and are in operation, while for the rest trail runs have been completed with minor civic works still to be taken up. The new signals estimated to cost a little above Rs. 60 lakhs are part of the MCH's efforts to initiate road safety measures.

    It has already taken up painting of zebra crossings at 66 school zones and road markings at 10 junctions.

    Traffic signboards have been installed at 558 important places and paintings done in 21 road stretches.

    Road improvement

    The MCH has also decided to improve roads near 44 junctions. While work on 10 of them has been taken up in the last few months, 15 junctions needing partial land acquisition will be completed in a couple of months' time. Nineteen other junctions requiring major land acquisition will be completed before the year-end, officials said.
