NEW DELHI: The initial post-mortem report of 62-year-old Hemlata Gupta, a recipient of Padma Bhushan who was found murdered under highly mysterious circumstances at her Prasad Nagar residence here on Saturday, has indicated that she was strangled. The police have found almost Rs. 1 crores in the bank account of the retired doctor. Though she had been living in her brother's flat for the past two decades, she owned a three-bedroom flat at Vasant Kunj in South-West Delhi and a plot in neighbouring Gurgaon. In view of these facts, the police are probing if someone had an eye on her property. The incident came to light around 11 a.m. on Saturday when an elderly couple came to see Ms. Gupta for treatment. They found the main door open and thinking that she was inside, they decided to wait for her in the drawing room. But when she did not turn up, they went to the bedroom where they found her body with its hands and legs tied and eyes and mouth taped. There was ransacking in the house, but no valuables were apparently missing from there. The police are preparing a list of those who frequented Ms. Gupta's house to verify their antecedents.
