For a flood-free Bangalore Sir, With the onset of monsoon, despite the best efforts of the commissioner of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike it is likely that Bangalore will experience flooding owing to the poor drainage system. Several suggestions that can be easily implemented have been ignored. The quantum of storm water that has to be drained has gone up dramatically in Bangalore because of increased built-up area. If rainwater harvesting is made compulsory for all buildings, the run off into the drains can be reduced. Another suggestion that has been made is to provide soak pits at regular intervals in storm water drains, which can serve as rainwater harvesting points on public property. One hopes the commissioner will take note of suggestions to augment his efforts to provide a flood-free Bangalore.

Solution to traffic problems Sir, Why is it that Bangalore seems to make news for wrong reasons, even though the city is the hub of the information technology sector? Bangalore has become an overcrowded city and there are not enough flyovers. Road discipline is poor and most roads are blocked with traffic jams. Why can't the coalition Government take steps to solve the traffic problems of the city and restore its splendour? J.G. Kanagaraj, Chennai
Change bus route Sir, Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) runs 248D from Bharat Nagar to Vidyaranyapura. At present, 248D runs two trips in the morning. The second trip at 9.10 a.m. is not regular, making it inconvenient for the residents of Bharat Nagar. On enquiry, officials said that the second trip was cancelled owing to traffic jams en route. I suggest that the service be run through Ring Road instead of Peenya. I urge the BMTC officials to look into the matter. K.
