Corrections and clarifications

In "Righteousness, religion, and right-wing politics" (Editorial page, May 15, 2006), a reader points out a factual error in the sentence "She attacked `young Muslim girls who have lost their identity of Islam and are presenting the look of a Bollywood actress but not Fatima and Aisha (R.A.) [respectively, Muhammed's daughter and sister]'". Aisha was Muhammed's wife; Fatima his daughter.

There are a few factual errors in "Windies at high noon", an accompanying box (based on www.windiescricket.com) for the lead story "Calypso Magic" (The Hindu-Magazine, May 14, 2006, page 1). Gary Sobers completed his record breaking 365 not out against Pakistan on March 1, 1958, and not 1959 as stated. Also, Vivian Richards amassed 1,710 runs in 1976, and not 1,811 as mentioned. This is still the record number of runs scored in a calendar year.

The heading "Minister jailed" ("Briefly", May 14, 2006, page 1) is incorrect. The report was on former Maharashtra Transport Minister Surupsinh Naik being jailed. He had earlier resigned from the ministership before surrendering. The heading should have been "Ex-minister jailed", and in the text as "Former Maharashtra Minister ... ."

In "Tamil Nadu Assembly Results" (May 12, 2006, page 7), under the results for Tiruppattur, it was stated that in 2001, Raja T.K. (PMK) had won both by a margin of victory of 5,761. A reader says it is incorrect. In Tiruppattur (Sivaganga district) won by Periyakaruppan K.R. (DMK), K.K. Umadevan (AIADMK) was successful in 2001. The error arose as there are two constituencies by the same name.

In "Policy expectations in a changing polity" (Editorial page, May 13, 2006), a reader says that in the sentence "It is well known that liquor excise, particularly on arrack and toddy, can lead to the immiserisation of the poorest in the State", the word should be "immiseration" and not "immiserisation". Both words mean "economic impoverishment".

The date of birth of Rabindranath Tagore is Monday, May 7, 1861, according to the website of Visva-Bharati, under the heading "Rabindranath Tagore: The Founder, Life Sketch". Referring to the report "Tributes paid to Tagore" (May 8, 2006), on how Parliamentarians paid floral tributes to Rabindranath Tagore in Parliament House on his 145th birth anniversary, a few readers have pointed out that other newspapers and AIR gave his date of birth as May 9.
