CHENNAI: The Adyar police made a breakthrough in the murder of a woman student at Gandhinagar following the arrest of K. Raj Prabhu of Sivaganga district on Monday. Architecture student Anitha Shoran (19) was found dead in her apartment in Gandhinagar on May 8. Addressing reporters, Letika Saran, Commissioner, Chennai Metropolitan Police, said that a few weeks ago the victim's mother, Nirmala Jayaraj, a doctor, had approached a real estate broker, Arul, for purchase of a plot. Raj Prabhu, a close relative of the broker, was staying with the latter on Thiruvengadam Street, Adyar. On Monday last, Raj Prabhu came to the victim's house in Gandhi Nagar after Dr. Nirmala left the place. He entered by the unlocked main door. He attacked Anitha with a knife when she raised an alarm after seeing him searching a safe. She swooned. He went to the next room in search of cash. But Anita regained consciousness and raised an alarm. Angered by her reaction, Raj Prabhu slit her throat and dumped his bloodstained shirt in a draw near the cot. Later he took an autorickshaw, reached home, and boarded a bus from Koyambedu to his hometown. The Commissioner said six special teams interrogated more than 100 persons.
