BANGALORE: Though they work in the growing hotel industry, the condition of the hotel workers is poor. They get less salary, their jobs are not guaranteed, and they do not get any service benefits. The hotel workers and their families want the State Government to help them out. This condition of the hotel workers was discussed at the 10th anniversary celebrations of Karnataka State Hotel Workers' Welfare Association on Monday. Minister for Labour Iqbal Ansari promised them of solving their problems by making amendments in relevant social legislations. This includes payment of Rs. 5,000 as minimum salary, he said. Speaking on the condition of hotel workers, former Minister R.V. Deshpande said hotel workers, who have been the cause of the growth of the hotel industry, were working in pathetic condition. They have no job security and the salary paid to these workers was less. "With the less salary component, many workers depend on the tips given by those who eat in the hotel, which is not guaranteed." The Government should look into the miserable condition of hotel workers and their families. It should take steps to increase their salaries. It should devise schemes to improve their condition, including making provision for providing workers with provident fund, he said. The Minister said he would instruct the Labour Commissioner to take steps for making Rs. 5,000 as minimum salary for hotel workersThe State Government, he said, was committed towards welfare of those working in unorganised sectors, including construction industry. The Government will pass the Unorganised Sector Workers Welfare Bill in the coming legislature session, he said.
