Thiruvambadi's prayers

Residents of the Thiruvambadi constituency have a fervent prayer on their lips before they go to bed - that their elected representative get a speedy recovery.

Mathai Chacko, the young CPI(M) leader who wrested this traditional UDF seat from the Indian Union Muslim League, was hospitalised in Kochi after he developed sudden uneasiness a few days before the counting of votes last Saturday.

The party is still in a celebration mood since it had never tasted victory from Thiruvambadi. Mr. Chacko had unsuccessfully contested from this UDF bastion in 1987. Last time he won from the Meypayur constituency.

However, the party shifted him to the neighbouring constituency to capture the seat held by the Muslim League since 1991.

Mr. Chacko trounced IUML's M.C. Mayin Haji by a margin of over 5,000 votes in one of the high-pitched electoral battles witnessed in the district.
