Audio and video recording of evidence of witnesses planned

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Government is planning to legalise the use of audio and video recording facilities to record evidence of witnesses to deter them from turning hostile, as has been the case in a number of high-profile cases, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil said in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

The proposed amendment would be part of a Bill for amending the Code of Criminal Procedure Act, to be introduced shortly, Mr. Patil said. He was replying to a brief debate on the Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill, 2006 which was passed by voice vote.
