The Madurai Division of the Southern Railway, one of the eight proposed under the divisionalisation scheme, was inaugurated by Mr. A.R. Rao, Senior Deputy General Manager, Southern Railway, at a function held at the Southern Railway Institute buildings in Madurai on May 16. The other division proposed for inauguration is Vijayawada, the first broad gauge division on the Southern Railway. The Madurai Division's jurisdiction extends to about 870 route miles consisting of areas south of Tiruchi.
