This Day That Age
Mr. H.V. Kamath asked in the Lok Sabha on May 15 whether the Government was in touch with the Government of Burma to repatriate the mortal remains of the last Moghul Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, to India and whether he could expect that this would be done before the centenary celebrations next year of the national revolt of 1857. Mr. Kamath recalled that Bahadur Shah was one of the foremost leaders of the revolt. Prime Minister Nehru replied that the Government had not given thought to this matter, but there would be numerous difficulties in seeking to repatriate the remains, which were lying in a dargah in Rangoon. Mr. Kamath wanted to know why no consideration was given to the matter when the question was tabled six weeks ago. Mr. Nehru replied, "I am sorry for the ignorance of Mr. Kamath. The remains lie buried in a dargah. It is a very difficult and complicated matter to deal with because all kinds of religious and family considerations come in. It is not a purely governmental matter."
