A thumping applause for the Supreme Court for sentencing Surupsinh Naik, former Maharashtra Transport Minister, and Additional Chief Secretary Ashok Khot, to one-month imprisonment for giving licence to six sawmills in 2004 despite a ban on the same. One hopes this will send a clear message to Ministers and their ready-to-bend-backwards officials that violation of laws and contempt of court will not be tolerated at any level.

We have all hitherto believed that politicians are immune to punishment. But the belief has been belied by the judiciary.

The establishment of the sawmills was in clear violation of the Indian Forest Act. The problem in India is politicians and high officials have always presumed they are above the law.
