Centre committed to quota, PM tells Ramadoss

NEW DELHI: Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder S. Ramadoss and his party MPs, on Tuesday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and other leaders here and impressed on them the need for introducing the quota Bill in the current session of Parliament.

PMK sources said the Prime Minister told Dr. Ramadoss that the Centre was committed to implementing the proposal for providing reservation in private educational institutions. It was considering a number of options, including increasing seats in educational institutions.

At the meeting with Ms. Gandhi, she was reported to have assured the PMK team that steps would be taken for enacting a law on quota at the earliest.

Earlier, Dr. Ramadoss met Railway Minister Lalu Prasad, Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh and Janata Dal (U) leader Sharad Yadav and sought their support for bringing in the legislation.

Minister of State for Railways R. Velu and other party MPs, E. Ponnusamy, R. Senthil, A.K. Moorthy and M. Ramadass, accompanied Dr. Ramadoss.
