<36,3,,,,,,1>Whoever thought that a computer could emerge to be such an integral part of our daily lives that a day without it would mean absolute chaos? As the word `IT' sparked a new revolution in the early 80's the ones with foresight set about equipping themselves with relevant tools that would give them the edge over their peers in the job market. It did not disappoint, but went on to scale new heights that had critics gaping at all the possibilities the world of IT could bring. Today it's all about constantly updating oneself to make sure one is not left behind when quizzed on the subject of computers. Starting from the Bhartiya Saksharatha Mission which aims at computer literacy for one and all to established institutes like NIIT that have programs to suit professional needs, IT has come a long way. Computers now play a relevant role in every profession from accounts to medicine. The proliferation of institutes providing IT training skills in both rural and urban areas has helped shape the career of many a youngster.
Courses have been divided according to the aptitude and skills of the students. The C programming language is especially suitable for science and engineering students. As computers are indispensible at the workplace there are a number of programs under MS Office and others like C and C++ that help make work easier for officegoers. Computer programming for beginners consist of Visual Basic, C and Database Management System while advanced levels include the latest programmes like Java, .Net, database and networking platforms. These programs are also taught separately as specializations. Java is recommended for students and professionals who already have the knowledge of any programming languages. Software professionals are now upgrading their knowledge with programs like .Net which is a technology that enables access to information on any device without the restriction of place and time. Database designing is yet another course which enables students to work with SQL queries and is apt for those who are looking forward to learning database programming and also those who want to upgrade from other databases to SQL Server 2000. Web Development is a course structured to aid the design, implementation and maintenance of websites and developing web content. Job opportunities are aplenty in networking, a course which deals with the hardware of PCs. It imparts knowledge on the assembling and dismantling of computers. The installation of various operating systems, core networking essentials, the setting up of a physical network and hardware and software troubleshooting are taught. Through this course students gain expertise in hardware and network set up and support. Two year diploma courses in advanced software technology cover programmes like Unix, C++, Visual Basic and Oracle. Eighteen month software engineering courses comprise of SQL Server, Prog2k, Vfoxpro, OOPs, Client Server Tech etc. The rise of a number of software companies in the city has put IT professionals in demand. IT is not devoid of creativity and for those interested in unleashing their artistic talents animation is the key. Certain institutes offer courses in high-end 2D and 3D animation which includes classes in Maya, audio and video editing and special effects. Courses are also offered as diploma and advanced diploma in digital visual communication. The exciting world of computers await those who dare to give it a shot because IT is a field of work where the learning process never stops.
For Web designing, web development, database programming, software engineering, systems engineering and networking, information systems management and BPO management are only some of the courses that are taught. <110>Sajini Sahadevan
