KANNUR: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) has provided 83,054 new phone connections in its Kannur secondary switching area (SSA) in the fiscal year ended on March 31.

Kannur BSNL General Manager P.T. Mathew said at a press conference here on Tuesday that the telephone density in the SSA, comprising Kannur and Kasaragod districts and Mahe, was 18.11 per cent.

Disclosing that over 14,000 applications for basic telephone connections were pending, he said these would be cleared by September. After that telephone connections could be provided immediately on request, he added.

The new connections provided during the last financial year included 58,072 landline connections and 24,982 WLL connections, Mr. Mathew said. In the current fiscal, the target was to provide 45,000 landline connections, 50,000 WLL connections and one-lakh mobile connections, he said. Telephone connections disconnected over three months would be reconnected on request without levying the rent for the period of disconnection, he said.

He said that 26,536 post-paid connections and 90,815 pre-paid connections had been provided during 2005-06. Pre- and post-paid connections were now available on request. There were now over 3,400 broadband DataOne subscribers in the SSA under home and business plans. The facility was now available in 49 exchanges, he said adding that it would be started in 100 more exchanges this year. Nearly 10,000 DataOne connections would be provided this year, he said. Subscribers of home and business categories could apply for the broadband start-up 250 plan, he said adding that the monthly rent for the facility would be Rs. 250. The annual rent if paid in advance would be Rs. 2,500. Other broadband connection plans such as Home Plan Unlimited and Unlimited Plus were also available in the SSA, he added.

Mr. Mathew said that 132 new towers would be installed in the SSA this year as part of widening the mobile coverage.
