KOZHIKODE: The need for management students to imbibe the rich Indian tradition and ethos was emphasised by speakers at a national seminar on "the Indian ethos in modern management thought" organised in Kozhikode on Tuesday by the Farook Institute of Management Studies (FIMS). Inaugurating the programme, Dr. Syed Iqbal Hasnain, Vice-Chancellor, University of Calicut, and Dr. M.G.S. Narayanan, historian, in his keynote address, pointed out that not enough attention had been given to this area of study.
Managers
They thought quality of an organisation was determined by the quality of its managers. Dr. Narayanan, a former Chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), was also quick to point out that there were not many centres that offered facilities for study of Indian ethos. This was in sharp contrast to the situation in Japan where a large number of institutes had been established by local people to promote and teach their ethos, he said. Prof. Tripthi Sing of the Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIMB) presented a paper on "measuring spirituality at work". Prof. Mathew J Manimala, also from IIMB, spoke on "deontic motivation" while K. Ravi Kumar, Director, FIMS, presented a paper on "Mastow, Freud, Plato and the Indian ethos". P.K. Ahammed, Chairman, FIMS, presided.
