CHENNAI: The Association of University Teachers has welcomed the creation of a separate Ministry for Higher Education, describing it as a long-felt need. Several areas in higher education the arts, sciences, humanities, technical and teacher education have witnessed a phenomenal growth during the past two decades. The AUT has been voicing concerns about the rapid degeneration of quality as well as the alarming increase in fee structure. Denial of access to the poor, pay scales and service conditions of teachers, issues of admission procedure were among the subjects that required dedicated attention, its general secretary, P.Jayagandhi, said in a press release. AUT members have now expressed the hope that the Ministry will do a thorough study of the various factors affecting the development of higher education in the State and expedite remedial steps in consultation with teacher associations.
