CHIKMAGALUR: Deputy Director of Public Instruction B.N. Krishnamurthy has said that 979 school dropouts aged between six and 14 have been made to return to school through a special campaign under government programmes such as "Chinnara Angala" and "Sethubandha" in 2005-06. He told the district implementation committee meeting of the total literacy campaign here on Monday that 19 schools had been opened in rural areas in the district this year at a cost of Rs. 4.10 lakh. In addition to this, 20 schools introduced computer education courses in 2005-06. He said a five-day education tour was organised for meritorious students and children belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in collaboration with the Tourism Department. He said a three-day residential training programme was imparted to 400 children on sanitation and to prevent girls from dropping out of school. Mr. Krishnamurthy informed the meeting that Rs. 6.22 lakh was spent for special classes for 13,841 children who were weak in some subjects.
