`Gangamma jathara' begins

Correspondent

CHITTOOR : A two-day folk festival, Gangamma jathara, began here on Tuesday. C.K. Babu, hereditary trustee and former MLA, performed `puja' to the Gangamma idol which was installed in the bazaar street.

Devotees in the town, particularly women, thronged the street early in the morning and performed `puja.'

It is a customary practice that devotees, who took oath, wear different types of clothes and rebuke the deity with vulgar and filthy languages, as they believe it will satisfy the goddess.

The Excise Department, as a precautionary measure, closed wine shops in and around the town to prevent any untoward incident. Police forces have been deployed in the street for smooth conduct of the festival.
