Sasikiran stops Malakhov

NEW DELHI: K. Sasikiran outsmarted overnight leader Russia's Vladimir Malakhov to reach four points after the ninth and penultimate round of the Bosna Sarajevo 2006 Grandmaster chess tournament in Sarajevo on Monday.

It was Sasikiran's fine display in the rook and pawn ending that settled the contest in 55 moves of Sicilian Wing Gambit.

The results (ninth round): Vladimir Malakhov (Rus, 5) lost to K. Sasikiran (Ind, 4); Borki Predojevic (Bih, 4.5) drew with Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu (Rom, 5); Arkadij Naiditsch (Ger, 3.5) drew with Magnus Carlsen (Nor, 5).
