Nothing wrong in providing quota for OBCs: Uma Bharti

Madurai bureau

She calls for a debate on reservation in private sector

MADURAI : The Bharatiya Jan Sakthi president, Uma Bharti, has called for a debate on reservation in private sector even while supporting quota for Other Backward Classes in institutions of higher learning.

Addressing newspersons on her `Bharat Bachao Yatra' in Ramanathapuram and Madurai on Tuesday, the former Bharatiya Janata Party leader called for a halt to the ongoing agitation against reservation for OBCs in institutions of higher learning. There was so much disparity in society and opportunities were not equal. There was also a threat of privatisation and the Government was not able to generate jobs. In this scenario, unemployment would be the greatest threat to the nation, even above terrorism.

There was nothing wrong in providing reservation for OBCs who were denied opportunities because of poverty and social imbalances, she said.

Ms. Uma Bharti appealed to those spearheading the agitation against reservation to stop their protest and understand the condition of people living in villages.
