Labour laws must be respected, says Prime Minister

Special Correspondent

CPI delegation met him to highlight labour law violations

  • Large-scale violation of labour laws alleged
  • Contract labourers exploited mercilessly
  • Workers' right to organise must be protected

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said labour laws need to be respected to protect the interests of workers.

Mr. Singh said this to a Communist Party of India (CPI) delegation, led by Gurudas Dasgupta, that met him here on Tuesday to bring to his notice labour law violations, particularly by foreign companies.

"Mr. Singh said the Centre would look into the issue and also ask Chief Ministers to prevent labour law violations," Mr. Dasgupta said.

"We are not opposed to the entry of foreign companies into India. But, workers have been facing a large-scale violation of labour laws, including their trade union rights, economic and social deprivation," a letter submitted to the Prime Minister said.

    Rampant in Gurgaon

Deployment of contract labourers in production and related activities is rampant in major industrial units in Gurgaon. This violated provisions of the Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act, the letter added.
