KADAPA: R. Prasad, GATE topper at the national level in 2005-06, has been awarded a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 by KSRM College of Engineering. College chairman S. Sankar Reddy handed the cheque to Mr. Prasad, college principal K. Satyanarayana Reddy said in a statement. - Staff Reporter

Houses promised

Srikakulam: Minister for Revenue and Relief Dharmana Prasada Rao on Tuesday promised pucca houses to all victims of fire accident in Panjangi village near Amadalalvalasa. In the fire accident on Sunday night 48 houses were gutted. In the same village a few days ago 20 houses were reduced to ashes. All the fire victims would get pucca houses under Indira Awas Yojna, Mr.Prasada Rao said. - Special Correspondent

Fatal fall

Kakinada: A worker in cashew plantation, Cheeru Pandu Dora (43), who fell from a cashew tree while plucking fruits in Devaratigudem in the agency area on Tuesday, succumbed to the injuries. The Rampachodavaram police registered a case and sent the body for postmortem. - Correspondent

Change in official's posting

HYDERABAD : The Government on Tuesday posted S. Chellappa as secretary to the State Human Rights Commission, according to a fresh order issued by Chief Secretary T.K. Dewan modifying the one released on Monday. - Special Correspondent

Ryotu Sangham calls for bank bandh

HYDERBAD : Andhra Pradesh Ryotu Sangham has called for a bandh of banks throughout the State on May 31 (except in Hyderabad) to press demands of farmers, including waiver cooperative loans up to Rs. 50,000.

K. Ramakrishna, president and R. Venkayya, general secretary, in a statement on Tuesday demanded fresh loans to farmers at 4 per cent interest and steps to end suicide by farmers. - Special Correspondent

Cheap liquor claims a life

Kakinada : Mythari Phanindra, 26, of Ramanaiahpet in Yelesweram mandal died reportedly due to consumption of cheap liquor in the early hours of Tuesday. The police registered a case.

In another case, Pyla Nageswera Rao, 34, was electrocuted when came in contact with a live wire at Gokavaram on Tuesday. - Correspondent

BJP dharna tomorrow

HYDERABAD : As part of their efforts to pressure the Central Government to introduce a bill in the Lok Sabha on Telangana, State BJP leaders will hold a dharna on May 18 at Indira Park here from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

K. Laxman, party general secretary and official spokesman, said in a statement on Tuesday that Bangaru Lakshman, former president, B.Dattatreya, national secretary, N. Indrasena Reddy, State president, G. Kishan Reddy, floor leader in the Assembly, would participate in the protest. - Special Correspondent

RBI staff hold demonstration

HYDERABAD : Employees and officers of the Reserve Bank of India on Tuesday observed `anti-outsourcing day' opposing `ill-advised' move of outsourcing of the core functions in banks, insurance companies, RBI and its associates.

They held a demonstration here to press for several demands, including withdrawal of the work already outsourced. - Special Correspondent

Strike banned in 15 TTD departments

TIRUPATI : The State Government has issued a GO declaring 15 departments in the TTD as `essential services' with retrospective effect from March 25, 2006. In the wake of the GO, strike will be banned in the said departments for a period of six months from the said date.

The departments brought under the ambit of the G.O are waterworks, electricals, public health and sanitation, health, engineering (maintenance), transport, canteen, vigilance and security, dairy farm, temples covering queue complex and Potu, kalyana katta, reception offices, etc. - Special Correspondent

Ex gratia for minors killed in naxal violence

HYDERABAD: The State Government has decided to sanction ex gratia for the minors killed in naxalite violence.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Sub-committee on naxalite affairs headed by Finance Minister K. Rosaiah on Monday. - Special Correspondent

Rain forecast

VISAKHAPATNAM : Under the influence of upper air circulation over coastal Andhra Pradesh and the neighbourhood, rain is likely at a few places over north coastal Andhra and isolated rain over south coastal Andhra during the next 36 hours, according to a special bulletin issued by the Cyclone Warning Centre here. - Special Correspondent
