"Probe shielding Meerut fire accused"

LUCKNOW: The BJP and Teachers' group members in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council today alleged that the launch of a judicial probe into the May 10 Meerut fire was being delayed and the administrative inquiry was "aimed at shielding" those responsible for the tragedy.

They also demanded registration of a case against the then Meerut District Magistrate Ram Krishan. Raising the issue through an Adjournment notice, BJP member Swatantra Deo Singh alleged that the tragedy occurred owing to administrative negligence.

He said Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav had ordered a judicial inquiry but it had not yet started. ``It appears that an attempt is on to cover up''.

Teachers' Group leader Om Prakash Sharma also blamed the district administration for being responsible for the fire and demanded that the then DM be prosecuted. Leader of the House Ahmed Hasan said that a letter had already been sent to the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court to depute a judge for the inquiry.

Heat wave

Three persons died in severe heat wave which revived in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday after a brief respite owing to rains and thunderstorms in some parts of the State for the last two days.
