FIGHTING FOR THEIR RIGHTS: CITU district unit president K.R. Sriyan (left) handing over a memorandum to an official during the rally of beedi workers in Mangalore on Tuesday.
MANGALORE: The South Kanara Beedi Workers' Federation here staged a rally in the city demanding payment of the dearness allowance withheld by the beedi companies from 2003. It demanded that the companies give six days work for beedi workers. Addressing workers on this occasion, Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) State unit president B. Madhava said the Government and the managements of beedi companies were hand-in-glove in denying the workers their share of wages and other legitimate benefits. He said despite the study conducted by the Institute of Social Economic Change (ISEC) of Bangalore recommending higher wages and Dearness Allowance for beedi workers the Government and the managements were unwilling to comply. Mr. Madhava said the core committee constituted by the Government to study the state of the industry delayed its recommendations. This caused stagnation in the income of beedi workers, he said. The managements had agreed to pay the revised dearness allowance four years ago. CITU district president K.R. Sriyan participated in the rally.
