No pressure on us, says Pranab Mukherjee
Diplomatic Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
"Decisions concerning the country's strategic programme, including the development and testing of different classes of missiles, are based on technical factors and a continuous review and assessment of our overall security environment," the External Affairs Ministry said on Tuesday.
The Ministry spokesman, in a reference to Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee's remarks on the Agni-III missile, stated that it had already been clarified that the Minister was speaking in general terms about India's policy of responsibility and restraint in pursuing its strategic programme.
"We have no pressure on us. Nor are we putting any political pressure," Mr. Mukherjee was quoted as saying on Monday with regard to a possible test of the long-range Agni-III missile.
"It is just that we have decided to have self-imposed restraint because as responsible members of the international community, we want to keep our international commitments on non-proliferation," the Defence Minister added.
