CUDDALORE: The Tamil Nadu Archakas' Welfare Association has opposed the State Government's move to appoint people from all sections as archakas. In a statement here on Tuesday, S. Arunachalam, association's State president, said the Cabinet's decision taken on Tuesday to appoint people of all castes as archakas would be in contravention to the Constitution that ensured religious freedom and also against the Supreme Court's verdict. Mr. Arunachalam said the temples were built and the worship and rituals were being performed as per the Agama sastras. He asserted that the Government did not have the right to take any action that would infringe upon the age-old practices. He urged the Government to drop the move.
