Steel plant unions seek release of their leaders

Special Correspondent

  • Gangavaram port issue believed to be at centre of row
  • Arrests of leaders termed untimely
  • Collector, Commissioner of Police to be approached for release of leaders

VISAKHAPTNAM: Trade unions in Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) condemned the illegal arrests of their leaders by the Govenment and demanded their immediate release.

    Arrests deplored

Talking to mediapersons here on Tuesday, CITU leader K. Srinivas alleged that the Government, frustrated by its failure to resolve the Gangavaram port issue, had foisted false cases against trade union leaders who were supporting the cause of the fishermen, which would only intensify the agitation further.

``Gangavaram is a village in the steel plant area. Many employees and many contract workers of our steel plant live there with their relatives. When the local residents have a problem, it is our duty to express solidarity with them and fight for their cause.''

AITUC leader D. Adinarayana deplored the manner in which the arrests were made as the steel plant leaders left their residences to attend general shift on May 5 morning and registered `attempt to murder' cases under Section 307 against them.

Visakha Steel Employees' Union leader Padi Trinadha Rao condemned the arrest of top CITU leaders N. Rama Rao and V. Dhanaraju.
