Bangalore: Dressing right is one way to be successful in your career. Unless you are in advertising or in some software companies where "no dress code" is the norm, every newcomer should look around and observe how colleagues and superiors are dressed and follow suit. "Sectors such as banking, finance and insurance demand more formal dressing because the clients you meet are top persons from major corporates. At least a formal shirt and necktie are a must for most days," says management consultant K. Panduranga. There may also be occasions when a suit needs to be worn as at formal meetings attended by the top management and business partners.
Tips for juniors
Dressing for success does not mean spending a huge amount on highly-priced suits and other clothing. For most at a junior level, a navy blue blazer in a good fabric of wool-polyster blend, a dark suit that can go with a variety of shirts and ties and if the budget allows it, a sports jacket in a subdued shade or pattern like small checks should do, he says. The blazer will need grey trousers to team up with. The trousers you invest in should include some to pair with the sports jacket and be elegant enough even without the jacket. "Investing initially in the best you can afford is a wise decision because you can be sure they will last well and look good on you years later. You should have enough shirts, socks and neckties so that you do not present the same look day after day," he advises.
Good grooming
Good grooming is as important or even more than good clothing. In the more conservative business sector, short to medium length of hair is still the norm and frequent haircut is a must. A smoothly shaven face or neatly trimmed beard and moustache add to your corporate image. "Invest in at least three pairs of formal shoes: two black and one brown or dark tan. The dark tan ones can be brogue, the type with holes punched in a pattern. Remember light coloured socks are only for weekends. Avoid garish ties and too brightly patterned shirts and you will be taken more seriously," he suggests.
Keeping odour away
Smelling pleasant is important in warm weather when you tend to perspire. A good deodorant and cologne with subdued fragrance, help complete the grooming part.
