CHENNAI: Members of doctors' associations, student groups and medical student unions expressed their support for the proposal to reserve 27 per cent of seats in central educational institutions for the Other Backward Castes (OBCs) here on Tuesday. At a press conference organised by the Doctors' Association for Social Equality (DASE) here, they condemned the protests against the proposal and described them as anti-social justice. It was announced that a `Campaign Committee for Reservation' would be formed at a meeting to be held in the city on Wednesday evening. A programme to felicitate Union Ministers Arjun Singh and Anbumani Ramadoss and Chief Minster M. Karunanidhi for their role in ensuring social justice would be held in June, members said. Several speakers pointed out that Tamil Nadu with its high proportion of reserved seats was also the leading State in the provision of health care services. Members of the Tamilnadu chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) said that the leaders at the centre did not consult them before the IMA declared its opposition to the proposal for reservations. Members of Physicians for Peace, All India Student Federation, All India Youth Federation and Tamilnadu Postgraduate Medical Students Association also expressed their solidarity in urging the Centre to implement the proposal.
