NHRC seeks report on police action
Staff Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called for "factual reports" from the Commissioners of Police of Delhi and Mumbai with respect to the lathi charge on students protesting against the proposed increase in reservation in higher education. Taking note of news reports of alleged police action on medical and engineering students the Commission said that no civilized state could justify the use of brutal force on peaceful demonstrators.
The Commission also took note of news reports regarding resident doctors of government hospitals who are on strike, and the Indian Medical Association's call for a `medical bandh', which had resulted in paralysing medical services in Delhi. The Commission appealed to the Indian Medical Association and the Delhi Medical Association to ensure that all striking doctors resume their duties.
