Police deny charges of custodial death

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: The city police have denied that a 40-year-old man, `Pant' Mohanan, died in custody at the Fort police station on April 29, 1998. The denial comes in the wake of an allegation raised by Fasaludeen who said he was in custody along with Mohanan at the Fort station when the alleged incident took place.

According to the police, the Fort police took `Pant' Mohanan and Fasaludeen into custody separately on April 29, 1998, after they were found loitering around in a suspicious manner. Both were produced before the court the next day. Three months later on July 30, `Pant' Mohanan was found dead in the Fort area. The post-mortem examination report stated that Mohanan had died after he had consumed poison. Mohanan's body was handed over to his relative Muralidharan. The body was cremated later at the Thycaud public crematorium.

The police said there was no substance in Fasaludeen's allegation that Mohanan was beaten to death at the Fort station on April 29 night and his body dumped by the police near a canal.
