BANGALORE: The State Academy of Science and Technology headed by the former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation U.R. Rao will organise a State-level science quiz contest for high school students at the taluk-level in association with the Vignana Parishat. Announcing this here on Tuesday, Minister for Science and Technology Ramachandra Gowda said that after a consultation meeting with experts, including Prof. Rao and Kannada software expert Srinath Sastry, it had been decided to hold the science quiz contest separately for rural and urban students. The Government had earmarked Rs. 12.3 lakh for holding the contest and had released Rs. 5 lakh to the Vignana Parishat for the purpose. Four students, two each representing the urban and rural, in each taluk would be selected for the district level competition. The first two winners at the district level would be given a cash prize of Rs.2, 000 and Rs.1, 000 and a certificate each. However, the first three winners in the final State level competition to be held in Bangalore would be given a cash prize of Rs. 10,000, Rs.7, 500 and Rs.5, 000 and a certificate each. The Academy had decided to organise science exhibitions at division and State levels involving degree students and provided Rs. 5.87 lakh for the purpose, he added. The Academy would institute fellowships from this year for those studying in first year B.Sc. It would select 10 students each from the eight universities in the State and provide them each a cash incentive of Rs. 300 each for 10 months. The fellowship would be extended to second year B.Sc. students from next year. However, selected students studying in final year B.Sc. would be given a visiting fellowship each instead of fellowship, he added.
