NEW DELHI: Regretting that competitive journalism both in electronic and print media has led to sensationalism, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Tuesday said lack of objectivity and presentation of views in the garb of news was eroding people's faith in the Fourth Estate. In many instances, journalistic ethics were being decided by the market, he said after releasing a book, "Courts Legislatures Media Freedom" authored by K. N. Harikumar and published by the National Book Trust. While specifically mentioning that he was not referring to ownership of newspapers as such, the Speaker said "but nowadays one knows generally which paper is supporting which political party". He went on to observe that "with some honourable exceptions, large sections of the media are aligning themselves to one political formulation or the other, thereby affecting their objectivity and credibility". Mr. Chatterjee said what was seen these days was competitive journalism. "Sensationalism, lack of due concern for objectivity and presentation of views in the garb of news are in a way, eroding the people's faith in the Fourth Estate". Asking how much space was being provided for parliamentary proceedings except when there were "some unfortunate disruptions", he said the country's most important elected body hardly found adequate mention. - PTI
