NEW DELHI: After failing to meet the target of property tax collection in the last financial year, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Tuesday said property taxpayers who want to avail of the 15 per cent rebate in the current fiscal would have to deposit their tax by June 30. According to the civic body's Assessor and Collector Anil Bamba, the date for availing of the rebate would not be extended beyond June 30 and taxpayers would be liable to pay one per cent interest per month on the amount due on the subsequent quarter. "For instance, if a taxpayer is paying his tax in the second quarter (July to September), he will be liable to pay interest on the instalment of the first quarter plus balance tax on remaining quarters," he explained, adding that those taxpayers who want to pay their tax liability on quarterly basis could also pay their taxes without any rebate and avoid any penal action against them. Stating that the civic body would take strict penal action against defaulting taxpayers and not extend the date for payment, Mr. Bamba said the process for collection of property tax for 2006-07 has already begun and all arrangements have been made so that people do not have to face any difficulty in depositing their taxes.
