Two years have elapsed since the death of E.K. Nayanar, one of the most popular leaders, who had set a record of sorts as chief minister. The vacuum left by his demise has not effaced the memories. The veteran communist leader is still being remembered for his biting wit and sarcasm, which never missed its mark. When ardent admirers and party cadres are getting ready to observe his second death anniversary on May 18, P.R.V. Warrier, who was one of his close associates, is bringing out a book, `Kanappurangalile Nayanar' which focuses on the personal and political life of the communist who is still loved by Keralites all over the world. Austerity and simplicity were the two distinct features of Nayanar, recollects Mr. Warrier. The book relates a series of incidents that touch upon the personal and political life of the leader. Mr. Warrier, who was Nayanar's close associate for nearly 25 years, was well-versed with his ways, thoughts, likes and dislikes. He faithfully depicts his impressions about the leader with whom he shared a warm camaraderie. When Nayanar frets and fumes and makes the most scathing comments, it does not hurt those who knew the true self of the leader. Mr. Warrier remembers that Nayanar was uncompromising in his views and maintained financial discipline. Life in the capital, as Chief Minister and as State secretary of the CPI(M), made no difference on Nayanar. His needs were minimum and the way of living same. Amidst official, political and personal chores, Nayanar used to listen to radio news and loved watching films and television programmes. Be it at home or a cinema, Nayanar used to react aloud and that never failed to evoke laughter. Warrier also recollects the incidents when he watched `Mathilukal' along with Nayanar. The book would be released by Nayanar's wife, Sarada, at a function to be held at Kalliassery on May 19.
