Tamil Nadu politics

The report that AIADMK leader and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa is likely to stay away from day-to-day Assembly proceedings because her partymen have advised her to do so in view of the humiliation she suffered at the hands of DMK MLAs almost two decades ago is disturbing. Much water has flowed under the bridge since then. Today, the DMK is an ally of the Government at the Centre. Far from following the example of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, who did not attend a single session when the AIADMK was in power, Ms. Jayalalithaa should set an example for future opposition leaders.

T.S. Govindarajan,
Hyderabad

Is it proper for a leader of Ms. Jayalalithaa's stature to stay away from the proceedings to the disappointment of those who voted for her? Especially when her party has a formidable strength of 61 members? Did she not, as Chief Minister, fault Mr. Karunanidhi on the floor of the House for his non-appearance in the Assembly? By participating in Assembly debates, she will make her presence felt.

V. Ganesh,
Chennai

As an articulate person, twice Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, a mass leader with charisma and one who has overcome many political challenges boldly for more than a decade, Ms. Jayalalithaa should reconsider her decision.

T.S. Satyam,
Chennai

PMK leader S. Ramadoss' reported request to Mr. Karunanidhi to consider reviving the Legislative Council, coming at a time when a large section of rural masses lack even basic amenities, is outrageous. I appeal to the Chief Minister not to accede to the request. Spending on an upper house while so many priorities remain unfulfilled will amount to a sin.

K. Seshadri,
Chennai
