Civic employees go on lightning strike

ANANTAPUR: Employees and workers of Municipal Corporation of Anantapur went on a lightning strike from Wednesday evening after a building inspector of the town planning section of the civic body was allegedly manhandled by miscreants.

The incident had allegedly occurred in the Old Town market area, when building inspector Nagendra, other officials of the town planning section and staff were overseeing the removal of an illegally constructed shed near Municipal High School.

Thirty miscreants led by Fayaz and his brother Riyaz, merchants, allegedly pushed aside Town Planning Officer Satyanarayana, Supervisor Ishaq and about 10 staff members of the section and attacked Nagendra. The building inspector sustained bleeding injuries on his right eye and right hand.

Nagendra and other of the town planning section immediately represented the matter to Mayor R. Parasuram and Commissioner K.V. Anjaneyulu and urged the two to take steps to prevent the increasing attacks on the corporation staff. The Mayor and Commissioner assured the employees that they would take up the matter.Mr. Nagendra also lodged a complaint in the One Town police station. Later, Anantapur Municipal Employees and Workers Association led by its president K. Balasubramanyam, general secretary Noor Ahmed and others represented to the Superintendent of Police, who in turn referred the matter to the Circle Inspector of One Town.

Municipal workers' unions affiliated to CITU and AITUC also expressed solidarity with the employees and workers association and along with the latter demanded the arrest of persons who had attacked the building inspector of the municipal corporation.
