NELLORE: In a bid to house all Government offices under one roof, the district administration is planning to construct a hi-tech collectorate complex in the heart of the town. With the present collectorate building being unable to accommodate all offices under one roof, almost all departments except revenue are functioning from rented buildings. This has been creating a lot of hardship to people, who come to the Collector's office to submit their grievances. "We have now zeroed in on a few sites, among which, a 10-acre site located close to both the District Government Hospital as well as the Roads and Building Department guest house, appears suitable on many fronts," District Collector M. Ravi Chandra told The Hindu on Wednesday.
Estimate
It might either be a six to 10-floor complex or individual blocks as per the corporation norms and be constructed in a few years at a site well connected to the town. A minimum of Rs. 20 crore will be required for completion of the proposed complex. "But it will not be a tough task for the district administration to pool that much money as we might sell encroached lands in the town through public auction to generate sufficient funds," Mr. Ravi Chandra said.
Touch screens
The new building will have all kinds of modern facilities required for smooth functioning of the official machinery. "We have plans to install touch screens on the ground floor of the proposed complex to enable people know their grievances, applications or petitions status. It will save time as well as avoid crowding at sections," he said. The Collector said that the existing collectorate building, which was built during the British regime, would be converted into a heritage building besides locating a library and museum in it.
