Pondicherry
Special Correspondent
Pondicherry: Pondicherry-based Rajiv Yuva Kendra coordinator P. Venkatachalapathy has said that the new Congress government here should ensure that the genuinely eligible families coming under `below poverty line' were identified properly before extending benefits. In a release here on Tuesday, he welcomed the announcements N. Rangasamy (who will head the new Congress government for a second term in succession) made during the poll campaign recently that families holding ration cards (irrespective of the colour) would be issued 10 kg rice free. He also lauded the poll assurances such as provision of a monthly relief of Rs. 1000 to educated youths (graduates) and subsidy enhancement from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh for the poor to replace their huts with concrete structures. Mr.Venkatachalapathy said the poll promise of issuing colour televisions free to families holding `red colour ration cards' would, in a majority of the cases, benefit the affluent. He alleged that people still remembered that the genuinely poor families, eligible for the `red colour cards,' were not properly enumerated. If the government went by the present identification of families to distribute television sets it would only cause chaos and the scheme would not reach the deserving. Mr.Venkatachalapathy said there should be a thorough inspection and verification to identify the genuine poor and red colour cards given to them before distribution.
