HYDERABAD: The textile sector in the State is expected to be a $ 8 billion industry by 2015 and much of the growth would come from large-scale value addition through weaving, processing and garmenting, according to study by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). "With the increasing productivity in cotton and capacity addition in spindlage, Andhra Pradesh has high potential to go up the textile value chain. The State's weaving, processing and garment industry will utilise over 70 per cent of the cotton production by 2015, a significant jump from 35-40 per cent in 2005", the CII report on textile pointed out. Considering the need for continuous improvement of cotton production in Andhra Pradesh, the third largest cotton-producing State, CII urged the Government to continue its pressure on Monsanto for further reduction of cottonseed prices.
Plea for sops
The study appealed to the Government to provide sops for the manufacture of technical textiles, encourage setting up of more auto looms and facilitate establishment of processing units in the coastal belt, where there was no water scarcity. To facilitate large-scale development of integrated textile industry, CII recommended to the Government to establish a textile city on 2,500 acres with sufficient water supply and effluent treatment. The study estimated that by 2015, weaving in the State would touch 4139 million metres.
