Pondicherry
S. Nadarajan
Pondicherry: The recent Assembly poll verdict in Pondicherry has brought to the fore several important features. While some of the important senior political leaders and also candidates of long standing in the Assembly were defeated, the new House would see the entry of nine debutants elected either on party ticket or as independents. The nine first timers are: Nandha T.Saravanan (DMK, elected from Muthialpet), Om Sakthi Segar and V. Omalingam (both elected on AIADMK ticket from Nellithope and Cottuchery in Karaikal), `Bussy' N. Anand and V.K. Ganapathy (representing the PMC and elected from the Bussy and Karaikal south constituencies), P.R. Siva (MDMK, representing Tirunallar segment in Karaikal), J. Narayanasamy (Independent, elected from Villianoor) and R.K.R. Anandaraman and P. Arulmurugan (both elected on Pattali Makkal Katchi ticket from the Ariyankuppam and Mannadipet constituencies). Among the senior party leaders who were defeated included R.V. Janakiraman (DMK), P. Kannan (PMC), C. Jayakumar, M. Chandirakasu and A.V. Subramanian (sponsored by the Congress). There will have no representative from Karaikal which has in the past distinguished itself as a political nerve centre in Pondicherry. The Congress sought to retain four seats in Karaikal but of no avail. Among those defeated are Deputy Speaker in the outgoing Assembly, A.V. Subramanian and the Welfare Minister in the outgoing Congress cabinet, M. Chandirakasu. An informed source in the Congress said that its poor showing in most of the pockets was due to `silent conspiracy' engineered within the party to sabotage the winning chances of some of its important nominees.
