Legislators absent at review meeting

Special Correspondent

Only Sedam MLA Sharanaprakash Patil participated in discussion

  • KDP meeting was chaired by Agriculture Marketing Minister
  • It discussed scarcity relief works and drinking water shortage
  • MLAs regularly fail to turn up at such review meetings

GULBARGA: Almost all the MLAs, except for Sedam MLA Sharanaprakash Patil, were absent at the quarterly review meeting of the Karnataka Development Programme chaired by Agriculture Marketing Minister Sharanabasappa Darshanapur on Wednesday.

    Chairs vacant

Chairs reserved for legislators at the review meeting were vacant. Two MLCs, Shashil G. Namoshi and Amatappa Kandakur, participated in the meeting. Mr. Namoshi left the meeting immediately after it started to attend a meeting convened by the district BJP to discuss the modalities of the election to the Legislative Council from the North-East Graduates' Constituency scheduled to be held in June.

Gulbarga district is represented by 13 MLAs, two MPs (Iqbal Ahmed Saradgi and K.B. Shanappa) and three MLCs.

Hardly any of the MLAs participate in the review meetings convened to discuss the problems of the district. MLAs who regularly attend the review meetings included M.Y. Patil, B.R. Patil and Sharanaprakash Patil.

Occasionally Chandrasekhar Patil Ravoor and Revu Naik attend these meetings, while others remain conspicuous by their absence.

In Wednesday's KDP quarterly meeting, many issues including the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, urban and rural water supply scheme, problems pertaining to the Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company, minor and major irrigation works, scarcity relief works and steps taken to tackle the drinking water shortage were discussed in detail.

    Officials questioned

Dr. Patil, representing the Sedam Assembly Constituency, quizzed officials about the performance of various departments.

Lack of participation of other MLAs was felt at the meeting since problems faced in other areas of the district, except Sedam, did not come up for discussion.
