Grievance day meeting

KARUR: The farmers grievances day meeting would be held at the RDO office, Kulithalai, on May 26. Farmers are expected to submit their petitions pertaining only to agriculture, well before the meeting date, Collector A. Karthik said in a press release.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 111.59 feet on Wednesday. The inflow was 4,371 cusecs and the outflow 2,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Beaten to death

ERODE: One person was beaten to death here on Tuesday night. According to the police, Ganesan of Edayankattuvalasu here borrowed money from a private finance to buy a two-wheeler. As he did not repay the amount, finance owner Venugopal and an employee took Ganesan to the office premises on Tuesday night. It is stated that the two along with another person beat Ganesan indiscriminately. Ganesan swooned and he was admitted to a private hospital where he died. The Erode town police have registered a murder case against the finance firm owner and two others. A search is on for the trio. - Staff Reporter

Rice at Rs. 2 a kg

ERODE: Family cardholders who are eligible for rice may purchase the same at Rs. 2 a kg from June 3, according to a release from Collector D. Karthikeyan on Wednesday. He said the cardholders could get 12 to 20 kg for the same price. Now, 35 kg rice each was given to people living below the poverty line under Antyodaya Anna Yojana Scheme at Rs. 3 a kg. Such beneficiaries too could purchase rice at Rs. 2 a kg. The Collector said sufficient stock of rice was available for distribution. - Staff Reporter

Two defunct farmers' markets to be revived

Nagercoil: Two defunct farmers' markets in Nagercoil and Myladi would be revived and made fully functional soon, said the Nagercoil MLA, A. Rajan. Speaking to presspersons, he said another market, which was functioning at Vadaserry during the DMK regime in 1996-2001, helped farmers in a big way as it eliminated the role of middlemen. But it languished without proper patronage owing to the indifference of the AIADMK government. He said basic amenities and new infrastructure would be provided in the two markets after they got revived.

`Jayalalithaa Peravai' to meet tomorrow

TIRUNELVELI: A meeting of the `Jayalalithaa Peravai' of the district would be held here on May 19. According to its secretary, Nainar Nagendran, the Peravai's Tirunelveli East and West districts and Tirunelveli City office-bearers, MLAs, former MPs and MLAs, office-bearers of MGR Mandram, MGR Youth Wing, Students' Wing, Advocates' Wing, Anna Thozhir Sangam, Farmers' Wing, Doctors' Wing, Minority's Wing, local body representatives and others would attend the meeting, to be held at Nellai Sangeetha Sabha at 10 a.m.

Residents block road with body of man

DINDIGUL: Residents of Salaipudhur blocked four-road junction in Nilakottai by laying a dead body for an hour demanding immediate action against persons behind the death. Police found the dead body in a dry stream near Salaipudhur and identified it as that of Balamurugan, a worker in a private mill. They alleged that an unidentified gang had murdered the worker and asked the police to nab the culprits.

Complaint against ration shop staff

THENI: Residents of Ettapparajapuram in Andipatti taluk, on Wednesday, refused to purchase ration commodities from the fair price shop alleging that the salesmen insisted cardholders to purchase other items along with rice.

They said the salesmen demanded Rs.90 instead of Rs.70 for selling 20 kg of rice. They had also insisted on buying rava and other items along with rice.

Acting on the information, Collector Rajesh Lakhoni rushed to the shop and ordered the staff to supply rice only. Later, he said action would be initiated against officials who were coercing cardholders to buy other items. — Staff Reporter

Jayalalithaa to take oath on Thursday

CHENNAI: The former Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary, Jayalalithaa, will take the oath as member of the Assembly at the Speaker's chamber at the Secretariat here on Thursday.

Pro-tem Speaker D. Sudarsanam told presspersons here on Wednesday that Ms. Jayalalithaa, who did not take part in the oath-taking ceremony on Wednesday, sought an appointment at 11.30 a.m. on Thursday for taking the oath.

Desiya Morpokku Dravida Kazhagam president Vijayakant also requested the pro-tem speaker to administer him the oath on Thursday. - Special Correspondent

Special train

CHENNAI: Southern Railway will operate a special train from Chennai Egmore to Madurai on May 19 to clear the extra rush of passengers.

Train no. 0615 will leave Egmore at 8 p.m. on May 19 and reach Madurai at 5 a.m. the next day. It will stop at Tambaram, Chengalpattu, Tindivanam, Villupuram, Vriddhachalam, Tiruchi Dindigul and Kodaikanal Road.

The composition will be one AC two--tier, 12 sleeper class, 5 general second class, two parcel vans and 2 luggage-cum-brake van coaches.

Order modified

CHENNAI: The Government has partially modified its order naming key functionaries of the Tamil Nadu Iyal Isai Nataka Manram.

Film director Rama. Narayanan will be its chairman, as announced before. But poet Ilayabharathi has been appointed as Member-Secretary instead of V. Chandrasekar, who was named earlier, says an official release issued on Wednesday. - Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The results of the Plus-Two examinations, held in March, will be released on May 22.

The results will also be made available to all schools at 9.30 a.m. the same day. Change in food supply pattern

CHENNAI: Following its move to increase the supply of eggs to children at noon meal from July 15, the Government has decided to change the pattern of protein-rich food supply at the noon-meal centres.

Boiled eggs will be served on all Tuesdays and Fridays, boiled potato on Mondays and boiled black gram or green gram on Thursdays.

According to an official release, the Government is also preparing a plan for procuring eggs from self-help groups, which will be encouraged to set up poultry units by offering them financial assistance. The plan will be devised in such a way that it benefits the newly formed SHGs and youth self-help groups. - Special Correspondent
