KOZHIKODE : The district panchayat has chalked out a comprehensive scheme for improving educational standards at school level. The basic objective is to reach the major section of students in the primary level up to the secondary stage. District panchayat president K.P. Kunahmmed Kutty said the project, to be unveiled during the new academic year, would be implemented with the help of local self-government bodies. "The project envisages the uplift of the school education sector from the pre-primary to the plus two level. It would be a collective effort of the grama panchayats, municipalities and the corporation. The primary objective is to improve educational standards through remedial coaching, teacher training to improve efficiency besides provision of infrastructure," Mr. Kutty said. Education standing committee chairman, M. Radhakrishnan said the technical clearance for the programme is being sought from the district planning committee. "On the anvil is the improvement of infrastructure of 42 Government schools, while academic assistance would be given to all schools including aided institutions," he said. The schools at Beypore, Palazhi and other centres that lack adequate infrastructure facilities such as buildings would benefit from the project. "The facilities of EDUSAT and IT Mission will be utilised to the maximum at the school level," Mr. Radhakrishnan added. Rs. 60 lakhs has been set apart for the educational uplift scheme. `Remedial teaching' is a major component of the new programme. Resource centres would be set up in all the educational districts for orientation in the subjects taught in high school classes. Worthwhile results are expected from the remedial teaching initiative in a couple of years. The professional expertise in training of organisations such as the District Institute for Education and Training (DIET), would be sought in the implementation of the project during the new academic year. A meeting with district education authorities and others is planned on May 19.
