KOZHIKODE: Management experts from business schools and the corporate world have gathered at the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode (IIM-K), for the ninth annual convention of the Strategic Management Forum (SMF). The SMF is a consortium of IIMs and other top-level management schools, including XLRI, MDI, IIFT and IIFM, which seek holistic improvement and enhancement of skills in strategic management. IIM-K director Krishna Kumar told presspersons at a pre-convention meet here on Wednesday that over the years the convention has brought together managers and management teachers from the country's top business schools and companies. IIM-K's Board of Governors chairman A.C. Muthiah will inaugurate the event on Thursday. Speakers at the convention include G. Rajmohan, chairman, State Pollution Control Board; Shankaran P. Raghuram, managing director, Blueshift; Shekhar Choudhry, director, IIM-Kolkata; Apte, director, IIM-Bangalore; K.R.S. Murthy, former director, IIM-Bangalore; Amtab Kumar, director general, Competition Commission of India; Rahul Goswamy, Ranbaxy, Vijay Angadi, managing director, ICF Ventures; S.K. Kalia, general manager, Bank of Baroda; and M. Ayyappan, chairman and managing director, Hindustan Latex. Prof. Kumar said the SMF has helped improve the standards of teachers in management schools. Sahay, Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon, who was also present at the press conference, said a sizeable section of the participants in programmes for managers and management-teachers in North India in recent times were from South India, including Kerala. "This is a healthy trend as it is proof of the interest on the part of the managements of new business schools in improving skills of their faculty members," he said. Prof. Kumar said the growth of IT, Internet facilities and the development of road and air connectivity between Kozhikode and other metros had improved the IIM-K's rating as a venue for major management programmes. The IIM-K, which was set up in 1996, is one among the highly rated IIMs in the country. The institute has increased its student strength and offers management development programmes (MDP) and faculty development programmes (FDP). IIM-K had also pioneered the interactive distance-learning programme (IDL). Its sprawling 100-acre picturesque campus is considered one of the best in the country. "The IIM-K campus is so attractive that it is time for educational institutions to start thinking of developing the concept of academic tourism," said a management expert from North India who is at IIM-K to attend the SMF convention.
