Translation prize

BANGALORE: President of the Central Sahitya Akademi Gopichand Narang has approved the selection of the Sanskrit version of S.L. Bhyrappa's Kannada novel "Dharmasri" translated by Janardhana Hegde for the 2005 Sahitya Akademi Translation prize in Sanskrit.

A press release by the akademi's regional centre here on Tuesday said that Prof. Narang had given his approval following the unanimous recommendation by the selection committee comprising Usha Choudhuri, N. Veezhinathan and V. Kutumba Sastry.

The prize will be presented to the translator on August 23 in Bhopal. — Staff Reporter

Detention upheld

BANGALORE: The orders passed by Bangalore Police Commissioner Ajai Kumar Singh detaining two persons under the Karnataka Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug Offenders, Gamblers, Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders and Slum Grabbers Act, 1985, commonly known as Goonda Act, has been upheld by the Advisory Board constituted by the State Government under the provisions of the Act.

According to a press release from the Commissioner of Police, the Advisory Board has upheld the detention of Sanjeeva of J.P. Nagar and Ayaz Chaudhari of Cottonpet for a period of one year. — Staff Reporter

Ban on film sought

BANGALORE: Archbishop of Bangalore Bernard Moras on Tuesday urged the Censor Board to ban the screening of the controversial Hollywood film "The Da Vinci Code" in the country.

Terming the movie, starring Tom Hanks, as diabolic, the archbishop, in a press release, said: "It is a vicious attack on the divinity of Jesus Christ and will build an erroneous impression against the Catholic Church and the Christian faith. Anything that distorts the long-cherished truth and affects religious sentiments should be condemned outright." — Staff Reporter

College gets autonomous status

BANGALORE: The College of Fine Arts being run by the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath (KCP) has been accorded autonomous status by the University Grants Commission from the current academic year.

An official release from KCP stated that the autonomous status, granted for a period of five years, was aimed at enhancing the quality of higher education in the field of visual art. — Staff Reporter

One dies in accident

BHADRAVATI: One person died and eight others were injured when a goods vehicle overturned at Ashok Nagar, near here, on Tuesday. The vehicle was proceeding towards Ammanagudda temple near Joldhal when the accident occurred.

The deceased has been identified as Sundara Singh from Bangalore. His relatives and friends who sustained injuries have been admitted to various hospitals in Shimoga. — Correspondent

Elections to gram panchayats

Belgaum: The notification to conduct elections to 111 seats falling vacant in 77 gram panchayats in 10 taluks of the district was issued here on Wednesday.

According to a press release, the last date for filing nominations is May 24. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be taken up on May 25 and last date for withdrawal of nominations is May 27. In case of contest, polling will be held on June 4 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and counting of ballot papers will be taken up at taluk headquarters concerned on June 5. — Staff Correspondent

Doctors' protest

PANAJI: Medical services at Goa Medical College hospital were partially affected on Wednesday as Resident doctors, interns and medical students went on a 24-hour token strike to protest the police action against protesting students in Mumbai and elsewhere in the country. On their agitation against reservation policy, a spokesman of Goa Association of Resident Doctors said the programme would be chalked out later in consultation with Indian Medical Association and All India Resident Doctors' Association. The agitators also took out a rally in the city and held a sit-in on the GMC premises later. — Special Correspondent

Power project

PANAJI: The Goa Government will soon call for expression of interest from private parties to appoint consultants for its proposed 60 MW hydel power project. Chief Electrical Engineer Nirmal Braganza said on Wednesday at an interaction programme organised by Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry that the Department was in the process of formulating a 10-year power plan for the State. Hydel power generation on BOOT basis and encouragement to captive power generation in private sector would be the highlights of the plan. Power Minister Digambar Kamat said the Government was exploring all possibilities of getting more Central power allocation for the State. — Special Correspondent

DAVANGERE: Heavy rain lashed Davangere city on Wednesday evening. Low-lying areas were inundated. Rain brought cheer and respite to people of Davangere who were experiencing sultry weather for some time now. — Staff Correspondent

Arrested

DAVANGERE: Police arrested Kanikaraja (40) of Bhadravathi and recovered from him jewellery worth Rs. 90,000 and one kilogram silver. The police said that the arrested was involved in numerous cases of theft reported in Hassan and Davangere and other States also. — Staff Correspondent

Students disappointed

DAVANGERE: Students and parents thronged cyber cafes on Wednesday expecting that the Pre-University Education Board would release results of PU examinations on its website. But to their disappointment, the results were not announced by the PU Board due to technical snag. — Staff Correspondent

Chief Minister's visit

Raichur: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy is scheduled to visit Irkalgad village in Koppal district and Jawalgera village and Manvi town in Raichur district on Thursday. According to the tour programme received by Deputy Commissioner's office here, the Chief Minister will leave Bangalore by a helicopter at about 8 a.m. and land at the Ginigera airstrip in Koppal district at 9.45 a.m. After attending a wedding at Irkalgad village, he will reach Jawalgera village at 11.45 a.m. by helicopter. Later, he will arrive at Manvi town at 1.45 p.m. by helicopter and inaugurate the office building at the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee yard and also inaugurate a petrol bunk in the town. After attending party workers meeting in the town, he will leave for Bangalore at 3.30 p.m. by helicopter. — Staff Correspondent

Hut gutted

Raichur: A hut belonging to Suryanarayana was gutted in an accidental fire in Basawanna Camp in Manvi taluk on Tuesday. Household articles, gold ornaments and foodgrains, all worth Rs.1.5 lakh, were destroyed. The Sirwar police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Toddy seized

Raichur: The Raichur police arrested Rajashekar (25) from Ghalibnagar locality and Beemavva (40) from Mangalwarpet locality in the city and recovered 60 litres of spurious toddy from them on Tuesday. They have been remanded in judicial custody. — Staff Correspondent

335 borewells sunk

BIJAPUR: As many as 398 borewells are being sunk to tide over the acute water shortage in the district, and work on 335 are over. Reviewing the situation here on Wednesday, zilla panchayat president Arjun Rathod directed the officials to accord top priority to the problem.

Disputing the claim by officials that 89 villages were getting water through tankers, he said not more than 30 villages were getting tanker supply.

Demands by other villages should be met without delay, failing which stern action would be taken against officials, he said. — Staff Correspondent

Farmer commits suicide in Hassan district

HASSAN: Kariyappa (50), a farmer at Marashettihalli in Arsikere taluk of Hassan district, who reportedly consumed poison as he was unable to repay a loan, died on Tuesday, according to the police. Referring to a complaint, the police said Kariyappa took a loan of Rs. 50,000 to drill a borewell for cultivating five acres of land. As the crops failed and he could not repay the loan, he consumed poison, the police said. — Staff Correspondent

Fish Workers' Forum to meet at Bhubaneswar

MANGALORE: The National Fish Workers' Forum will hold a meeting at Bhubaneswar, Orissa, from June 5 to June 8 to discuss issues concerning fishermen and the Centre's move to reserve seats for Other Backward Classes in institutions for higher education, according to Vasudeva Boloor, general secretary of the forum. He told presspersons here on Wednesday that representatives of the International Group of South Indian Fishermen Federation, based in Kochi, Kerala, and the International Collective in Support of Fishermen, Chennai, would participate in the three-day meet to discuss issues involving fishermen. — Staff Correspondent

Admission to military school

Belgaum: Belgaum Military School, affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and member of Indian Public School Conference, has invited applications to fill vacancies in ninth and 11th standards (boarders only) for the academic year 2006-07. Admission to ninth standard will be on the basis of a written test on June 11. For admission to 11th standard, marks obtained by candidates in the 10th standard examination conducted by the CBSE or other recognised boards will be taken into account. Delimitation unscientific: Prakash

DAVANGERE: Janata Dal (Secular) State unit president M.P. Prakash has questioned the method adopted for the delimitation of Legislative Assembly constituencies by the Delimitation Commission, and said the exercise will not guarantee social justice. Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, he urged the Government to change the system for reservation of constituencies by amending the law. — Staff Correspondent

Job scheme implemented

BANGALORE: The State has implemented the Union Government-sponsored Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme effectively in five backward districts and ensured a minimum of 100 days of employment for 4,67,636 labour card holders, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj C.M. Udasi said on Wednesday. He told presspersons here that the State had fixed a minimum daily wage of Rs. 62.50, and wages were paid by cheque to cardholders. He said Over five lakh people from 1,091 villages in Bidar, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Gulbarga and Raichur districts had opened bank accounts, he added. — Staff Reporter

Kingfisher services from Mangalore

MANGALORE: Kingfisher Airlines on Tuesday began direct daily flights between Mangalore and Chennai and between Mangalore and Bangalore. The airline is using ATR (Avions de Transport Regional) aircraft on these two routes. As per the flight schedule given on the website, www.flykingfisher.com, Flight IT 2441 will leave Bangalore at 9.40 a.m. and arrive in Mangalore at 10.45 a.m. Flight IT 2442 will leave Mangalore at 5.05 p.m. and reach Bangalore at 6.10 p.m. Flight IT 2443 will depart from Mangalore at 11.15 a.m. and reach Chennai at 12.55 p.m. Flight IT 2444 will leave Chennai at 1.25 p.m. and arrive in Mangalore at 3.15 p.m. — Staff Correspondent
