KOLLAM: V. Francis, Judge of Ad Hoc Additional Sessions and Fast Track Court 1, on Wednesday, sentenced three persons to rigorous imprisonment for five years and imposed a fine of Rs. 25,000 each for doping a taxi driver and taking away his car. If the fine is not paid, the three will have to undergo two years of simple imprisonment also. Those convicted are the second accused in the case, Baiju, third accused, `Motta' Santosh and sixth, Mullah. Two others were acquitted. The first accused, Chhotta Babu, had committed suicide in the Central Jail at Poojapura during the course of the trial. The charge placed by Public Prosecutor S. Shenaji against the accused was that they hired the vehicle, an Ambassador car, from the Kottarakara stand on the night of March 24, 2001, for a trip to a place in Alappuzha district. As the vehicle was nearing the destination, the accused looped a towel around the neck of the driver, Rajendran, overpowered him and took control of the vehicle. He was forced to drink cola mixed with a dope. When he lost consciousness, the accused thought he was dead and so, dumped him on the roadside at Punnapra and left with the vehicle. The vehicle was sold two days later for Rs. 2.8 lakhs to Roy Antony. Following information the police had taken Mr. Rajendran to the Government medical college hospital.
